Photo Printing
Sometimes it's cheaper to print pictures for posters and visual aides from your local photo store rather than print them at home - and they look nicer, too. That's the way it is for me, at least. I love Sams Club Photo. I upload online and pick up later. It works for me.

I speak to Heavenly Father (point up)
He hears and answers me (point to self)
When I pray in Faith (fold arms)
INTRO VERSE 2:
- Hang up “How to pray...” and numbered poster
- Remove cover one lyric line at a time (from the numbered poster).
- Learn lyrics and Sing.
VERSE 2:
(Hold up finger numbers)
1. I begin by saying Dear Heavenly father
2. I thank Him for blessings he sends
3. Then humbly I ask him for things that I need
4. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen
AFTER LEARNING THE WHOLE SONG,
Have a child choose a heart that says how we are going to sing (the link goes to printable docs that match the posters above). We played Heart Darts.
Sing and repeat How To Sing activity.

3 Bowls
Have 3 bowls:
Bowl #1 WHO (as in who is going to sing)
Bowl #2 HOW (how they are going to sing it.
Bowl #3 WHERE (where they are going to sing )
WHO: girls only, boys only, teachers only, those wearing white or black or blue or pink or brown or yellow, blond hair, brown hair, etc...
HOW: staccato (hot), forte' (loud), piano (soft), legato (smooth), stop/go, actions only, eyes closed, etc..
WHERE: sitting on chairs, backs against the wall, sitting on the floor, laying on the floor, sitting in a different chair, standing in the front, standing in a circle, etc...the kids only have by the time I count to 10 to get in position. When we are done with that song... count to 10 again and the kids must be back in their original chair.

Simple Actions to My Heavenly Father Loves Me
![]() |
This song is in ASL on the LDS church website. I looked at it and thought to myself that for me, I would need something a little more simple, but still ASL inspired. After some revisions and editing down (because my own actions were become quite complicated) this is what I came up with:
VERSE 1
Whenever I hear the sound of a bird BIRD SIGN
Or look at the blue blue sky BLUE SIGN
Whenever I feel the rain on my face RAIN SIGN
Or the wind as it rushes by WIND SIGN
Whenever I touch a velvet rose HAND TOUCHES HAND (perhaps in a small circle motion)
Or walk by a lilac tree FLOWER then TREE
I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world WORLD SIGN
Heavenly Father created for me *HEAVENLY FATHER / ME (thumbs point to self)
VERSE 2
He gave me my Eyes that I might see POINT TO EYES
The color of butterfly wings BUTTERFLY SIGN
He game me my Ears that I might hear POINT TO EARS
The magical sound of things MUSIC SIGN
He gave me my Live, my Mind, my Heart LIFE SIGN /POINT TO HEAD / HAND ON HEART
I thank Him reverently THANK-YOU SIGN
For all his creations of which I’m a part “ALL” SIGN
Yes, I know Heavenly Father loves me LOVE (cross arms), THUMBS POINT TO SELF
--- --- ---
*I am going to do the action for Heavenly Father as a "double Father" sign that goes up to Heaven and then fades into pointing to yourself with your thumbs. That's sort of what it looks like in the My Heavenly Father Loves Me ASL video on the LDS church website. The ASL sign for Heavenly Father is up for debate. This link will take you to a Yahoo Question to learn more, but note that the last link is not affiliated with myself or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Build a Snowman
I saw this idea from Sophia's Primary Ideas. Here's my version:
A child comes up and rolls a die. On roll turn #1 they roll a body. Turn #2, a face. #3 buttons. #4 accessories. Draw on the chalkboard or a posterboard or butcher paper or whatever you have available. I used the picking sticks to choose who would come up and I had the kids answer a question in order to get to roll the die.

Blow Dryer Box
The idea is kind of like... um.. on a game show where people step into a box full of cash blowing all around. Yeah. A smaller version of that. With a blow dryer.
I made my blow dryer box for fall with an autumn tree in the background and Dollar Tree table scatter for the blowing leaves.
Here's how it's going to work (for me):
I was going to have the names of songs on the leaves. Only.... it's turning out to be a little more complicated than just that. The leaves have a tendency blow out of the box and all over the place. And for effect I am going to put all 50 leaves in the box, not just the 8 songs we'll sing (it was sad with just a few leaves - and it was hard to get them to blow around. More = better). So I WILL have numbers on all the leaves (1-50) - the thing is, the numbers don't really mean anything, even though the kids think they do. The Pianist and I will just be going down a predetermined list of songs. I'll call out "leaf 25! what a great song!" and she'll just play the next one on the list. Or, I'll have the list, too, and I'll eyeball the next song and call out the name of that song when I look at the leaf number - like,"oh, I'm so glad you picked this leaf! I just looooove I Pray In Faith! Okay, let's sing!". That sort of thing. Sometimes it's the "magic of Primary" at work.
You can also add some movement/teaching conducting with this Lead Like the Wind idea.
Songlist:
*** LEARN, It’s Autumntime 46 - *after learned, sing while picking leaves
1. THANKFUL SONG: I Am Glad For Many Things 151
2. FUN SONG”: “Leaves” Are Falling All Around 241
3. THANKFUL SONG: Pray In Faith 14
4. THANKFUL SONG: For Health and Strength (round) 21
5. FUN SONG: “Leaves Are Falling From the Apricot Tree” 242
6. THANKFUL SONG: I’m Thankful to Be Me 11
7. FUN SONG: “Once There Was a Tree” 249 *(in the Fall the leaves fell off, leaves fell off, leaves fell off…)
8. THANKFUL SONG: My Heavenly Father Loves Me 228

Move Like Waves
Ask the children if they have ever been to the beach or ever seen a wave. How does the ocean move?
Ask, How does the melody of the song move? We are going to sing the song and move to the music the way waves move in the ocean. Remind the children to be reverent waves.
Tell the children to feel the melody and the rhythmn of the music. When the melody goes up the waves go up, when it goes slow the waves go slow.
Sing and move.
----- ----- ----- ----- -----
This could be used during review time to see the differences of many different songs.
*Optional, bring a water bottle with the top screwed on to demonstrate a wave.

Listening Ears
![]() |
I often remind the children to "turn on your listening ears". If I see their attention is elsewhere I'll say, "Oh ladies and gentlemen, it seems that our ears have gotten turned off. Can you please turn on your listening ears?". Then we will all give our ears a tweak to turn them on. It's cute to watch the little ones "turn on" their listening ears.
It works in JR Primary. Sr Primary thinks it's silly - it doesn't work as well with the older kids - but sometimes I forget who I'm talking to and say it anyway and am met with eye rolls. Oh well.
I Am a Child of God - Objects & Songs Correlation
![]() |
I used pictures instead of objects. This is one of those cookie bouquet holders - repurposed. :) |
THE PLAN:
Sing through all verses of “I Am a Child of God”
Tell them that the objects in the bag represent some part of the song “I Am a Child of God”.
Choose a child to come up and pick an object. Have the child will tell you what part of the song it goes with (they can ask the other kids for
help if needed).
After they’ve figured out which part of the song the goes with, everyone sings the corresponding song for that object (see below).
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
OBJECT CORRELATION:
Earth - “He has sent me here, has given me an earthly home”
I Lived in Heaven, pg 4
Family picture - “with parents kind and dear”
Families Can Be Together Forever pg 188
Scriptures - “help me to understand His words”
Keep the Commandments pg 146 OR Search, Ponder, and Pray pg 109
President Monson - “If I but learn to do His will”
Follow The Prophet pg 110
Heavenly Father & Christ - “I’ll live with Him once more”
I Know My Father Lives pg 5
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
EXTRA TIME?:
Pass an object. When song stops, the child holding the object has to finish the sentence.
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
SONGS IN THIS LESSON:
I Am a Child of God 2
I Lived in Heaven 4
Families Can Be Together Forever 188
Keep the Commandments 146 OR Search, Ponder and Pray 109
Follow the Prophet 110
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
PREPARE:
- picture of the Earth or small globe
- a picture of a family
- scriptures

"If You Can Hear Me...."
When the kid are getting rowdy say "If you can hear me, _________"....
Ideas for the blank are, touch your knees, wiggle your head, reach up high, stomp your feet, touch your nose. Repeat this with a few different actions. Talk in a normal voice. Do not raise your voice. Get quieter each time you speak, until you're whispering. Not everyone will do it right away. A few more will, then a few more, then a few more until you have everyone's attention. End on "If you can hear me, touch your elbows"- then you have them in a reverent position ready to listen.

*THIS LINK is all the lyrics to the songs w/flip charts in one document. I'm going to hand it out to my Teachers. It looks like this:
Teacher's Copy, page 1 of 3 |
THE PLAN:
Tape up a sign that says “Name That Primary Song About LOVE!”
JR:
Pass a heart around - when the piano stops, that child gets to come up and pick a piece of a heart puzzle with a song # on the back. Pianist plays a few notes of the song. Child tries to guess what song it is. Sing that song. Tape the piece on the posterboard.
SR:
Pass around 2 hearts. Two kids come up. I pick a heart puzzle piece. Pianist plays a few notes. Whoever knows the song first, rings the bell. Winner gets to tape up the piece on the heart. Sing that song.
*Every time “love” is said, either sit or stand
----- ----- ----- ----- ---- -----
EXTRA TIME:
After the heart puzzle is all put together;
JR: pass out printed papers for the kids to color and write notes on to the Bishopric
SR: pass out blank papers for the kids to draw and write notes on to the Bishopric
----- ----- ----- ----- ---- -----
ADD’L INFO:
The heart puzzle is a poster board on which a big outline of a heart is drawn on it (the pieces of the heart have the songs on them) - at the end of Primary write “WE Love Our Bishop!” on the heart. Give it to him after church for him to hang in his office.
*Make 2 - one for JR and one for SR.
----- ----- ----- ----- ---- ----
PREPARE:
- 2 posterboard heart-outline cards
- 2 sets of heart puzzle pieces
- write songs #s on the back of the puzzle pieces
- list of songs to song
- bell
- flip charts for the songs on the list
- printed color sheets
- blank paper
- crayons
Hot Cold Broken Hearts
![]() |
Tape halves of hearts on the board (have the other halves in a basket or bag or something for the kids to pick from).
*Optional - explain how Jesus is our Savior and mends broken hearts*
One child goes out into the hall.
Another child chooses from the colored hearts. (Be sure to read the heart before the child hides it so you know what song you're singing!) Then the child hides the heart.
Sing the song listed on the heart while the child who was out in the hallway looks for the hidden half. Play “hot/cold” to help the child find the heart (you know, get louder when they’re close, quieter when they go the wrong way...)
Repeat
----- ----- ------ ----- ------ ----- -----
PREPARE:
- Cut out hearts
- Cut hearts in half
- Choose the songs you want to review with this game...
- Write songs and #s on heart halves
- Separate the blank halves (they go up on the board) from the halves with the songs written on them (these are the ones the kids will choose from).
Word Blocker
Write all the words to a song on a poster. Cut out a giant ghost or paper blocks or something to block out some of the words a little at a time. Move the block around.
An example is: Eggcellent Singers, which is fun at Easter time.

Faux Lamination
Glue your cut out pieces to poster board, cover them with strips of clear packing tape then cut out the pieces, leaving an edge (the thicker the edge, the better). Yes, it can be lot of work - but it can be cheaper and sometimes more convenient than running to the store.
NOTE #2: This WILL make your scissors sticky. Especially with the heavier tape. The good news; scissors can be washed. :)
NOTE #3: I did not mean for my examples to have the same body position. They just want to say 'hi'! Both with their right hands, apparently.
visual aide covered in packing tape |
HOW TO:
*I put this tutorial together while making the monster missionary match game.
NOTE: The heavier the tape, the better. The cheap stuff is flimsy and hard to work with. The dollar store stuff is worthless. Scotch has a good heavy duty tape. After a year in the Primary Music Leader calling I've done this with all types of tape. :)

1. Pieces are glued or taped onto cardboard backing (a cereal box, in this case) |
![]() |
3. Flip it over. The tape will hang over the edge. Do not let it fold back on itself. |
![]() |
*Now it's face down. See? It's a cereal box. :) |

5. Trim the excess tape from around the edge. Leave a border of tape all the way around. Tape should be stuck to tape, there shouldn't be any sticky spots. |
![]() |
* Can you see the clear tape border? |

All done! |

Another picture, for good measure. |
Stand By Me
Never stand in one spot. If children are not being reverent while during singing time walk over to them and stand by them.

My Heavenly Father Loves Me Wheel Visual Aide
Wendy B. posted on Facebook and idea for a posterboard wheel for My Heavenly Father Loves Me. Here's how mine turned out.
- Cut a circle out of blue posterboard
- Cut a circle (same size) out of white posterboard
- Draw 8 "pie slices" on the white posterboard
- Cut out 1/8th slice of the blue posterboard (one "pizza slice")
- Make the blue posterboard look like the Earth
- Draw something for each line (4 in each verse, 8 all together)

My Heavenly Father Loves Me - Teaching the Song/In Depth Lesson Plan for Split JR/SR Primary
![]() |
I have a split JR/SR Primary. So sometimes I have to do different variations of an idea. I'm sure you can piece together this lesson plan to fit your needs. I also get music AND sharing time the first Sunday of the month, so I need something lengthy - take out parts if you need it to fit a shorter time frame.
This is what I'm doing for My Heavenly Father Loves Me, the song from February 2013.
- JR is making my flip chart (It's a very visual song. Give "blue blue sky" to the Sunbeams.)
- SR is doing a scripture+picture match-up
- (both are learning the song, of course)
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
THE PLAN:
First, teach the Simple Actions to My Heavenly Father Loves Me
Then....
JR - color pictures/flip chart:
Pass out blank pieces of paper and crayons
Pass out a word strip to each class
*Have them write their name on the back of their drawing!
While the children are drawing have Teachers help you sing “My Heavenly Father Loves Me" a few times.
Start with the first lyric set. Have everyone in the class come up and show their drawing while you sing to that point. Pull one picture out for each verse. Keep the children’s pictures to make a flip chart. Repeat, and so on...
-> Repeat this activity for the second verse. <-
-------
SR - Scripture+Picture Match-up:
Have the JR Primary’s pictures displayed on the board in order.
A child chooses & reads a scripture. Each scripture goes with each lyric segment (see list below). Children must figure out which picture (the ones from JR Primary) the scripture goes with it. Tape it under the right picture. Sing - but only sing the parts that have scriptures up. Hum the rest. Continue until all scriptures are up. Then do for the second verse.
Continue to do for the second verse.
SCRIPTURES/Lyrics:
--- V1 ---
- D&C 42:50 - He who hath faith to hear shall hear.
Whenever I hear the song of a bird
- Proverbs 4:25 - Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Or look at the blue, blue sky
- Zechariah 10:1 - Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.
Whenever I feel the rain on my face
- Psalms 78:26 - He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
Or the wind as it rushes by
- Psalms 105:15 - As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
Whenever I touch a velvet rose, Or walk by our lilac tree
- Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth
I'm glad that I live in this beautiful world, Heav'nly Father created for me
--- V2 ---
- 3 Nephi 13:22 - The light of the body is the eye; if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
He gave me my eyes that I might see
