Lyric Color Erase

For kids who can read, (or mostly SR Primary in my case) -
  1. Write the lyrics on a whiteboard in different colors (or chalkboard with colored chalk)
  2. After signing the song through, have a child roll a die.
  3. Number on the dice = color to erase. (or, instead of a # die, use a colorful-sided die)
  4. Erase all the lyrics that color.
  5. Repeat.

*To make this work in JR Primary, do with pictures. Perhaps glue them on colored paper so they have a colored border.

**** INSTEAD OF DICE, YOU COULD USE MAGIC COLOR CUPS to determine the color that needs to be erased.

Color Coded Lyric Split

This will work in SR, where kids can read - not so much in JR (for me, anyway...)

  1. Take the lyrics and split them up.Put them on different colored pieces of paper.
  2. Have coordinated colors on sticks (for the kids to hold in front).
  3. Invite a child up from each class. Give each child a color stick.
  4. The kids only sing the color the kid from their class is holding.
  5. Have the kids put down their color sticks and invite a new child from each class to come up.
  6. Repeat...

Line-By-Line Learning

Have each class learn one line of the song. Have that class stand up and sing their line. Tell the other kids not to listen to what the others are singing....kind of a reverse psychology. After singing line by line... ask if anyone could sing the whole song...all parts...- act very surprised that they all can do it. The kids will be very happy that they have "surprised" you by learning the whole song.

Picture Takeaway

image from LDS.org

Make 8x10 pictures of either words or pictures that represent words or phrases of the song. Have the children come up and hold the pictures. After singing the song approx. 3-5, have all the children close their eyes and take away 1-2 pictures away...have those children that were holding the pictures sit down and then have the children open their eyes and sing the song without those pictures. Do this until all picture helps are taken down. Repeatedly tell the kids how smart they are and then tell them you're trying to stump them. Reverse psychology :) ...the kids love it.

Word Blocker

Write all the words to a song on a poster. Cut out a giant ghost or paper blocks or something to block out some of the words a little at a time. Move the block around.

An example is: Eggcellent Singers, which is fun at Easter time.
