ASL For Children All Over the World

We sang and signed the first part really well in my Primary today!  :D

All over the world     ASL for WORLD
at the end of day,     ASL for DAY (it's like a sunset)
Heav'nly Father's     ASL for HF
children     ASL for CHILDREN
kneel down     point to knees
and pray,     fold arms

Each saying thank you     ASL for THANK YOU (every time you sing thank you....)
in his own special way,
Saying thank you,
thank you in his own special way.

"Gracias." (grah-see-ahs)
"Malo." (mah-loh)
"Wir danken dir." (veer don-ken deer)

All over the world tender voices hear.

Some say "tak," (tahk)
others "merci," (mare-see)
"Kansha shimasu," (kahn-shah shee-mah-sue),
we thank thee.

Our Heavenly Father hears them;     point to ear
He understands each tongue.

Our Heav'nly Father knows them;     point to head
He loves them,
crossed arms/hug self
loves them,
crossed arms/hug self
ev'ry one.    arms outreached to every one

Why I Like to Use Sign for Songs

Why I like to teach sign for songs:

I know there are a lot of songs available on LDS.org, but I prefer to place my own signs. I like to try to make the words match up with the signs. I know it doesn't always happen that way when signing  to the deaf community - but for hearing kids it's a good connection when the sign is the word coming out of their mouth, or close to it. I want the word-to-sign connection. Maybe this way isn't the most comprehensible when reading the signs, but my intent is not for the signs to be read - my intent is for 1) the children I'm teaching to learn the song, and 2) to solidify the meaning of the words with signs. Also, I try to make the signs go with beats and intricacies within the song to make them easier to do and remember. It's like choreographing a little hand dance. :)  I love singing, I love signing, I love the kids. I hope to be able to marry the singing and the signing  in a way that the kids I teach can comprehend and the deaf community can appreciate as well. The end. ;)

Not really the end.

I took two full years of sign language. I appreciate the language and the art.

Ok, the real end now.

Four Corners

·        Mark 4 spots in the room.
·        Have a chair up front, close to the board, facing the board.
·        One child sits on the chair, covering eyes
·        I count back from 10 while all other children go to corners.
·        Sing the song.
·        Child in the chair listens to the song, then chooses which corner was singing best. Those children sit down and hum. Remaining standing children are still in the game.
·        Choose a sitting child to sit in the chair up front.
·        Repeat until all kids are sitting.

Using 'Fun to Do' to Teach ASL

I am going to use the song Fun to Do from the Children's Songbook to teach signs. When the kids are singing they don't realize they are learning!
  1. Introduce the sign without music.
  2. Say it and show it.
  3. Offer any necessary explanation. Then put it in "Fun to SIGN" like this (sing and sign the bold word);
"HAPPY is fun to sign, fun to sign, to sign, to sign,
HAPPY is fun to sign
It's fun to sign
HAPPY "

The rhythm can change slightly depending on how many syllables are in the word, but you can make it work;

"ME is fun to sign, fun to sign, to sign, to sign,
ME is fun to sign
It's fun to siiiign ME"

"WONDERFUL is fun to sign, fun to sign, to sign, to sign,
WONDERFUL is fun to sign
It's fun to sign
WONDERFUL "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In application;

For teaching the I Stand All Amazed Chorus, I will do:
WONDERFUL
JESUS
CARE
ME
ENOUGH
DIE

Then we will sing the chorus... and magically the kids will already know the signs! Wow!

ASL for I Stand All Amazed

I was only planning on teaching the first verse in sign (the rest just normal singing), but I ended up typing it all out... so I'll just have to see how well my kids catch onto it!  I've already taught the 1st verse to my CTR5 and Sunbeam. They got it pretty fast, so I'm feeling optimistic.  :)

I will use the song Fun To Do to teach the signs! See here.

---------------------------------------------

1. I stand all amazed   (I, AM [stand], AMAZED)
at the love Jesus offers me   (LOVE, JESUS, OFFERS, ME)
Confused at the grace   (CONFUSED, GRACE)
that so fully he proffers me.    (THOROUGHLY [fully], HE, PROFFERS [same as offer], ME)
I tremble to know  (I, OVERWHELMED [tremble], KNOW)
that for me he was crucified,   (ME, HE [Jesus], CRUCIFIED)
That for me, a sinner,   (ME, SINNER)
he suffered, he bled and died.   (HE [Jesus], SUFFEREDHE [Jesus], BLED, DIED)

*(Chorus)
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me  (WONDERFULHE [Jesus], CARE, ME)
Enough to die for me!   (ENOUGHDIE, ME)
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!  (WONDERFULWONDERFUL, ME)

---------------------------------------------

2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine (MARVELHE [Jesus]DESCEND, THRONE/DIVINE)
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine, (RESCUE, SOUL, REBELLIOUS, PROUD, ME)
That he should extend his great love unto such as I, (HE [Jesus], EXTENDLOVE, ME)
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.  (SUFFICIENT, OWN, REDEEM, JUSTIFY)

*(Chorus)
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me  (WONDERFULHE [Jesus]CARE, ME)
Enough to die for me!   (ENOUGHDIE, ME)
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!  (WONDERFULWONDERFUL, ME)

---------------------------------------------

3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!  (ME, THINK, HANDS, PIERCED, BLEEDING)
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?  (MERCYLOVE, DEVOTION, ME, FORGET)
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat, (NO NO, ME, PRAISE (hallelujah is a long lasting sign),
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet. (UNTILATTHRONE/DIVINE, ME, KNEEL, AT, JESUS, FEET)

*(Chorus)
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me  (WONDERFULHE [Jesus]CARE, ME)
Enough to die for me!   (ENOUGHDIE, ME)
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!  (WONDERFULWONDERFUL, ME)

I Stand All Amazed "Take Two" VIDEO NOTES (notes to My Ward are Green):
  • We only know the first verse. It it undecided if we'll go further.
  • verse 1: "STAND" has been changed to "AM". (no sign here, I took it out - so not STAND or AM. Go right from I to AMAZED)
  • chorus: "ENOUGH" should be two bounces on the hand (two syllables = two bounces, easy peasy!)
  • chorus: add "floating O's" when you sing "ohhhh, it is..."
  • verse 2: "JE-SUS" sign should be on "that He" (I goofed a little)
There are a few slight 'hiccups' where you can tell i'm trying to remember what comes next. I did this in one take and one take only, so it is what it is.
  • verse 3: slowly continue "BLEEDING" through the end of the phrase.
  • verse 3: video is missing the sign "UNTIL, AT" (it's typed above...)
  • My children were talking and tapping things in the background.
  • The link to the video on YouTube is here.
  • Nice, gentle help from those who know ASL would be appreciated. :)

Lastly, read why I like to teach sign for songs.

*The idea of doing this song in ASL is not mine. The idea for these signs in these particular places is.

Did Jesus Really Live Again? Song Actions

Not Sign Language, but SONG ACTIONS:
Did Jesus really live again   (hold hands out with palms up)
Yes, when the third day came   (three fingers)
He wakened and he left the tomb   (walk in place)
He called Mary’s name   (cup hands around mouth)
Did Jesus come to those he loved   (Put hands over heart)
Yes, people touched his feet   (bend over and touch feet),
And of the fish and honeycomb  (wiggle hand back and forth like a fish swimming)
He did truly eat   (pantomime eating).
And there were nail prints in his hands   (point to hand)
And a spear wound in his side   (point to side)
Did Jesus really live again after he had died   (hold hands out with palms up)
Oh yes! And so shall I   (nod head)!

Sign Language Inspired Actions for When I Am Baptized

---> POSTSCRIPT <----
After doing all that work (below) I found THIS YouTube video of When I Am Baptized done beautifully in ASL. My work and research is still below, but the video is very nice (and would have been nice to find earlier...)
--------------------- --------------------- --------------------- --------------------- *I put together some simple signs for this When I Am Baptized. One ASL class in High School is what I'm going off of, so... feedback from someone who does know ASL would be appreciated. Hopefully there are no inappropriate signs. ;) I'm kidding, there's not.

*Also, here's where I talk about the sign for Heavenly Father (at the bottom of the post).

MODERATE SIGN:

I like to look for rainbows LOOK RAINBOW
whenever there is rain RAIN
And ponder on the beauty PONDER BEAUTY
of an earth made clean again. EARTH CLEAN AGAIN

I want my life flat hand on heart
to be as clean CLEAN
as earth right after rain. EARTH RAIN
I want to be the best I can flat hand on heart thumbs up
and live with God again. LIVE H.F AGAIN

I know when I am baptized KNOW point to self BAPTIZE
my wrongs are washed away MY WRONG WASHED
And I can be forgiven point to self FORGIVE
and improve myself each day. IMPROVE

I want my life flat hand on heart
to be as clean CLEAN
as earth right after rain. EARTH RAIN
I want to be the best I can flat hand on heart thumbs up
and live with God again. LIVE H.F AGAIN

SIMPLIFIED SIGN:

I like to look for rainbows

Simple Actions to My Heavenly Father Loves Me

This song is in ASL on the LDS church website. I looked at it and thought to myself that for me, I would need something a little more simple, but still ASL inspired. After some revisions and editing down (because my own actions were become quite complicated) this is what I came up with:

VERSE 1
Whenever I hear the sound of a bird BIRD SIGN
Or look at the blue blue sky BLUE SIGN
Whenever I feel the rain on my face RAIN SIGN
Or the wind as it rushes by WIND SIGN
Whenever I touch a velvet rose HAND TOUCHES HAND (perhaps in a small circle motion)
Or walk by a lilac tree FLOWER then TREE
I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world WORLD SIGN
Heavenly Father created for me *HEAVENLY FATHER / ME (thumbs point to self)

VERSE 2
He gave me my Eyes that I might see POINT TO EYES
The color of butterfly wings BUTTERFLY SIGN
He game me my Ears that I might hear POINT TO EARS
The magical sound of things MUSIC SIGN
He gave me my Live, my Mind, my Heart LIFE SIGN /POINT TO HEAD / HAND ON HEART
I thank Him reverently THANK-YOU SIGN
For all his creations of which I’m a part “ALL” SIGN
Yes, I know Heavenly Father loves me LOVE (cross arms), THUMBS POINT TO SELF

--- --- ---
*I am going to do the action for Heavenly Father as a "double Father" sign that goes up to Heaven and then fades into pointing to yourself with your thumbs. That's sort of what it looks like in the My Heavenly Father Loves Me ASL video on the LDS church websiteThe ASL sign for Heavenly Father is up for debate. This link will take you to a Yahoo Question to learn more, but note that the last link is not affiliated with myself or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
