Bach Stands All Amazed

J.Ashley Hall has an amazing arrangement (or mashup?) of I Stand All Amazed and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. I think I just died of excitement. Find it HERE

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*I'm definitely in over my head with this one, so maybe a cheat sheet (especially for me to know when the kids are joining the adults - on Verse 1 and each Chorus) will help me out:

1-21: hold until, VERSE 1  - "I stand all amazed".... (Everyone)
"...He suffered, He bled and died" ---[goes right into]---->  CHORUS (Everyone)

JESU JOY (all adults)

VERSE 2 (Men)
"...sufficient to own, to redeem and to justify" ---[goes right into]---->  CHORUS (Everyone)

JESU JOY (all adults)

VERSE 3 (Women)
"...until a the glorified throne I kneel at his feet" ---[pause for 12 counts]---->  CHORUS (Everyone)

AMAZING Things Jesus Did For Us (in I Stand All Amazed)

In my last hurrah for I Stand All Amazed 2014 I want to stress to my SR Primary the important things in this song. We only learned the first verse (with sign) so far. Last week a boy pointed out that there are 3 verses to the song. So all week I've been contemplating how to explore all of the verses. This is what I'm planning (less than 2 hours before church starts! eek!):
  1. Explain that singing hymns is bearing a testimony through song.
  2. Pass out hymnbooks.
  3. Sing all 3 verses of I Stand All Amazed
  4. Have the kids help you find keywords in each verse of the amazing of Jesus did for us in each verse. Write a big "1" on the board, then write the keywords around it. Sing that verse.
  5. Repeat for the other 2 verses.
  6. Explain that to understand what Jesus did for us is to have reverence for him.
  7. Sing all 3 verses of I Stand All Amazed again.
After you've been in the Music calling for a while you have random stuff lying around...
I had these numbers from a song last year. I glued pictures on pictures of Jesus I'd cut out from The Friend magazine.
I tacked these up on the chalkboard and then wrote words around the numbers.

Below is my cheat sheet (I get forgetful in front of people, so I have this in case I need to help the kids. They're so smart, though, I probably won't even look at it.):

AMAZING Things Jesus Did For Us (in I Stand All Amazed) -

Verse 1
love
grace
crucified
suffered
bled
died

Verse 2
descend
rescue
love
redeem
justify

Verse 3
pierced (hands)
bleeding (hands)
mercy
love
devotion

ASL for I Stand All Amazed

I was only planning on teaching the first verse in sign (the rest just normal singing), but I ended up typing it all out... so I'll just have to see how well my kids catch onto it!  I've already taught the 1st verse to my CTR5 and Sunbeam. They got it pretty fast, so I'm feeling optimistic.  :)

I will use the song Fun To Do to teach the signs! See here.

---------------------------------------------

1. I stand all amazed   (I, AM [stand], AMAZED)
at the love Jesus offers me   (LOVE, JESUS, OFFERS, ME)
Confused at the grace   (CONFUSED, GRACE)
that so fully he proffers me.    (THOROUGHLY [fully], HE, PROFFERS [same as offer], ME)
I tremble to know  (I, OVERWHELMED [tremble], KNOW)
that for me he was crucified,   (ME, HE [Jesus], CRUCIFIED)
That for me, a sinner,   (ME, SINNER)
he suffered, he bled and died.   (HE [Jesus], SUFFEREDHE [Jesus], BLED, DIED)

*(Chorus)
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me  (WONDERFULHE [Jesus], CARE, ME)
Enough to die for me!   (ENOUGHDIE, ME)
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!  (WONDERFULWONDERFUL, ME)

---------------------------------------------

2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine (MARVELHE [Jesus]DESCEND, THRONE/DIVINE)
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine, (RESCUE, SOUL, REBELLIOUS, PROUD, ME)
That he should extend his great love unto such as I, (HE [Jesus], EXTENDLOVE, ME)
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.  (SUFFICIENT, OWN, REDEEM, JUSTIFY)

*(Chorus)
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me  (WONDERFULHE [Jesus]CARE, ME)
Enough to die for me!   (ENOUGHDIE, ME)
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!  (WONDERFULWONDERFUL, ME)

---------------------------------------------

3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!  (ME, THINK, HANDS, PIERCED, BLEEDING)
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?  (MERCYLOVE, DEVOTION, ME, FORGET)
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat, (NO NO, ME, PRAISE (hallelujah is a long lasting sign),
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet. (UNTILATTHRONE/DIVINE, ME, KNEEL, AT, JESUS, FEET)

*(Chorus)
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me  (WONDERFULHE [Jesus]CARE, ME)
Enough to die for me!   (ENOUGHDIE, ME)
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!  (WONDERFULWONDERFUL, ME)

I Stand All Amazed "Take Two" VIDEO NOTES (notes to My Ward are Green):
  • We only know the first verse. It it undecided if we'll go further.
  • verse 1: "STAND" has been changed to "AM". (no sign here, I took it out - so not STAND or AM. Go right from I to AMAZED)
  • chorus: "ENOUGH" should be two bounces on the hand (two syllables = two bounces, easy peasy!)
  • chorus: add "floating O's" when you sing "ohhhh, it is..."
  • verse 2: "JE-SUS" sign should be on "that He" (I goofed a little)
There are a few slight 'hiccups' where you can tell i'm trying to remember what comes next. I did this in one take and one take only, so it is what it is.
  • verse 3: slowly continue "BLEEDING" through the end of the phrase.
  • verse 3: video is missing the sign "UNTIL, AT" (it's typed above...)
  • My children were talking and tapping things in the background.
  • The link to the video on YouTube is here.
  • Nice, gentle help from those who know ASL would be appreciated. :)

Lastly, read why I like to teach sign for songs.

*The idea of doing this song in ASL is not mine. The idea for these signs in these particular places is.

I STAND All Amazed

1) Divide the song between the classes (everyone sings chorus). Give each class a slip of paper with their line to sing. Have each class stand when it's their turn to sing. By the chorus, everyone is standing and everyone sings the chorus.

2) Switch what class has what line and repeat.

Video: EFY I Stand All Amazed

HERE is a video called "EFY 2013 I Stand All Amazed". It's acapella. It's nice. Seems geared more toward youth in the 12-18 crowd. I would like to show a video for this song, but it's an interesting song choice for Primary! I'm still searching... but this is a possibility....
